Course Description: This course is described to familiarize students with the techniques used in the preparation, purification, and analysis of organic compounds.

 

Course Objective: The course is intended to introduce students to the equipment and glassware found in the organic chemistry laboratory as well as its use: to introduce the most important procedures used in an organic laboratory in the fields of synthesis, purification, and analysis; and to bee able to determine melting points or boiling point of a sample, whichever is appropriate. 

 

Safety:

 

  1. GOGGLES ON AT ALL TIMES.

  2. NO FLAMES WITHOUT PERMISSIONS.

  3. NO FOOD, DRINK, OR SMOKING IN LAB.

  4. NO CONTACT LENSES.

  5. NEVER WORK ON THE LAB ALONE.

 

QUIZZES:  NONE

PRELAB:  SEVERAL WILL BE ASSIGNED

 

Grades: Will consist of 4 lab writeups.

January 23   -   Lab 1:   NMR of Unknown Samples

January 30   -   Lab 2:   Friedel – Crafts (DOUBLE AMOUNT)*

Feburary 6   -   Lab 3:   Nitration of Methyl Benzoate

Feburary 13   -  Lab 4:   Borohydride Reduction of a Ketone*

Feburary 20   -  Lab 5:   Esterification (n-Butyl Acetate)

Feburary 27   -  Lab 6:   Aspirin*

March  5   -        Lab 7:   Dibenzalacetone by Aldol

 March  12   -      Lab 8 :  Ester hydrolysis – Soap* (Fermentation of Surcose)

March  26   -      Lab 9:   Final Fermentation of Surcose

April 2    -          Lab 10: Sugar
